About Us
The 85 acres of apple orchard and farm land is
nestled away in Millbury Massachusetts.
The Farm was built in 1780
and purchased by the Stowe Family in 1840. From the mid 1800's to the
early 1900's the farm was used for growing vegetables, primarily blue
hubbard squash. The squash was delivered to local market's by horse and
wagon, the farm also raised dairy cattle for milk which was sold to larger
companies for pasteurizing and resale. Milking 63 cows by hand twice daily
made for a long and tiring day.
Apple
tree's were planted In 1928 which would soon turn Stowe Farm into Stowe Farm
Orchard, as it is recognized today. The squash business ended and the cows
were sold in 1972, the apple business was now booming. Each year two fellows
from Jamaica would fly over for seasonal employment to work in the fields
and pick the crop. The apples were packaged and delivered to local markets.
Pick your own apples and a country store was soon in operation.
1986
introduced horse boarding to keep the open fields from over growing. Today a
large herd of horses graze the cow fields of Stowe Farm Orchard. 1997
pioneered a dog boarding business known today as "Apple Acres". Stowe Farm
continues to diversify and thrive, 2003 launched an indoor arena, used for
indoor horse riding and dog training. The old picturesque cow fields still
exist today and are a home to the many animals of Stow farm, some of the
fields have grown into woods and are now being used for dog hiking trails
which go hand in hand with the kennel.
Over the many years, seven
generations of Stowe's have lived and worked here, three generations
still reside on the farm.
